First time poster. Just took up the sport last season and fell in love! I love the full-body workout x-country skiing provides. Helps keep me in shape for the summer mtn. biking. The Ski Location isn't quite accurate but it's the closest. The Forest Rangers in American Fork Canyon groom 2 campground roads just for x-country skiing: Little Mill and Granite Flat. Little Mill Campground is just past Timp Cave a bit and is a mile out-and-back with a gentle uphill slope towards the east. The snow groomer also cuts the ski track grooves (don't know what you call them) on both sides of the road. I did 2 laps last night (4 miles) by the light of my Petzl headlamp. I do this all the time alone at night and feel perfectly safe. There is about 5" of snow right now. I never hit asphalt. There will be a couple of feet by tomorrow. Granite Flat Campground is above Tibble Fork Reservoir. It's a large network of campground roads with a bunch of good variety. It has some steep spots that are fun and challenging for a novice like me. Saturday mornings I usually do the Alpine Loop road. It gets groomed for snowmobile use but I have found it to be a blast as well. I start at the Pine Hollow parking lot (where the gate closes the road for the winter) and ski to the summit. I've never had a problem with the snowmobiles. On a Saturday morning the parking lot is full by 9:00am so make sure you get there before that. This is my favorite route and provides plenty of off the groomed track skiing, on the way back down, if you desire. Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know of the great opportunities in northern Utah County.
