| 12/15/11 | daveh | Beaver Creek Trail classic skiing |
Mary and I skied the upper half of the Beaver Creek Trail this morning and were pleasantly surprised to find that there was about a foot of snow on the ground. They haven't packed it yet, but people have skied in a good classic track. I'm headed back to ski the whole trail, for my first classic workout of the winter. Never too late to train for Saturday's race. :-) |
| 11/14/11 | daveh | Trial Lake is great! |
There's now about a foot of snow where the Trial Lake road turns off the Mirror Lake Highway, and almost 18" along the mostly flat stretch up by Crystal Lake and Lake Washington. Snowmobiles had packed it on Sunday, so it was easy to set a nice classical track. The "Road Closed" sign was up at Soapstone, but the gate was open, so I just kept driving. The highway was plowed and almost totally dry. I'm sure they'd salted it. I stopped at the Forest Service office on my way home, and they said it would be kept open until after some hunt that's still going on. Hopefully that'll last a couple more weeks. |
| 11/09/11 | daveh | Trial Lake not quite ready |
Drove up the Mirror Lake Highway to see if I could find enough snow to ski on. It was totally bare to mile 22, and just a couple of inches where the road goes to Trial Lake. I was able to drive up to the Crystal Lake turnoff and park. With only three or four inches on the dirt road that goes south from there, I could ski, but the sun was doing noticeable damage. I'm sure today made it much worse. It definitely needs another storm. |
| 10/31/10 | ald | Trial Lake even better today |
Halloween at Trial Lake had several inches of pure fluff this a.m. - skiing was even better than yesterday. Make sure to invite Hanscom to break trail - it helps a lot. No rocks so you can even bring your good skis but waxing will be tricky so some form of mechanical base is probably best. We did have some "stickage" as the day wore on so toss in a can of your favorite fish scale spray in your fanny pack. Saw Deb and Dave Wagner coming in as we left and a few other "looked like skiers" cars as we drove back to Kamas. Hence the tracks may stay in place if the sleds or snow don't obliterate them. Road is still being plowed - not sure when that ends. Best time to start would be early as it seems to warm quickly after 10 a.m. or so. |
| 10/30/10 | ald | Try Trial Lake for a great kick and glide. |
Awesome classic skiing for the old guys this a.m. at Trial Lake - approx 1 foot of compacted snow - sun crust on the top, dry snow in the shadows - we hit it right this a.m. since 2 sled heads had make what was a very nice track. If it doesn't snow too much tonight the skiing tomorrow should be awesome. |
