Learning to Ski

Learn to Ski!

Nordic skiing can be enjoyed at a wide range of ages and fitness levels, and it's regarded as one of the best overall forms of exercise. Cross-country skiing is hugely popular, but it can be a hard sell for kids who often see it as the less-glamorous relative of downhill skiing. For parents, however, cross-country skiing is an easy to learn alternative to Alpine skiing and much healthier than weekends with the video game. And because it involves basically the same motion as walking, family members young and old can pick it up in no time.

Nordic skiing offers some excellent advantages to alpine skiing. Instead of trekking to a some expensive resort, families can find a cross-country ski trail that's public and close to home. To see if cross country skiing is right for you, families should sign up for a lesson at one of Utah's Nordic center. Most schools offer group lessons to kids ages six and up, and some can accommodate young children private family lessons.

Youth Learn to Ski Group

A fun youth program for children. Skiers learn the basics of cross country skiing with an emphasis on helping kids develop good technique.

Objectives: To develop basic skiing skills and a lifelong interest in skiing. Games, technique, and fitness exercises designed to develop basic skiing skills will be used to introduce kids to cross country skiing and ski racing. The objective is to develop a lifelong interest in skiing.

Parents are welcome to participate or to ski during the program. If a parent does participate they will be expected to romp, play, hop, jump, skate, and fall with us. In short we are going to play and have fun on skis, so be prepared. Parents of younger skiers may want to remain at the ski practice, especially if temperatures are cold.
