TUNA Programs

TUNA offers programs that are designed to foster a fun and enjoyable environment in which kids and adults can improve their skills as Nordic skiers and develop a life-long love of skiing. TUNA offers training programs in the summer and fall, and ski programs in the winter. Programs are organized according to ability, age, and motivation. The TUNA Nordic Ski Team (TNST) accommodates junior skiers at all levels, from beginners to advanced racers ages 8-20. The Learn to Ski program is for young skiers ages 4-8. TUNA also offers Adult skiing and training programs.

Learn to Ski Program

The Learn to Ski program is for young skiers ages 4-8. This is an introduction to Nordic skiing, and the emphasis is on fun, with games, relay races, treasure hunts, and obstacle courses. More detailed information and online sign-up is available here.

TUNA Non-Competitive Ski Team

The Salt Lake Nordic Ski Team includes Youth League and Touring Group programs for juniors 8-19 years old who want to ski 1 to 2 days a week. Youth League programs emphasize fun, teaching ski skills, and developing a life long interest in Nordic skiing. Touring group programs emphasize exploring off trail areas and may include some weekend tours in the Wasatch.

Equipment

  • Each participant will need an adequate pair of skis, warm boots and poles.
  • TUNA offers a limited number of season rental ski packages to program participants on a first come first serve basis
  • All youth renting skis must be registered in the program.
  • Season rental skis will be available for pick up during November of each season.
  • Free one-day rental skis are also available for the Tuesday and Thursday sessions from Wild Rose Mountain Sports (702 Third Avenue) on a first come first served basis.
  • Discounted rentals are also available for Tuesday and Thursday sessions from REI (3285 East 3300 South).

Uniforms

  • Participants are provided with a TUNA uniform (wind jacket and pants), on loan for the season.
  • Uniform pick-up is scheduled and announced in November of each season.

TUNA Competition Team

TUNA Competition Team Programs are for motivated skiers who want to compete. The comp programs are organized by the age classification used in Nordic ski racing:

  • U10 (J5) - ages 8-9
  • U12 (J4) - ages 10-11
  • U14 (J3) - ages 12-13
  • U16 (J2) - ages 14-15
  • U18 (J1) - ages 16-17
  • U20 (OJ) - ages 18-19

TUNA Junior Competition Team - U10, U12, U14

This is a more active, competition-oriented program incorporating a combination of games and formal training. This program is for those skiers with an interest in developing their skiing skills and for those who may want to race. Skiers should be proficient in both classic and skating techniques.

TUNA Competition Team - U16, U18, U20

This program is open to all motivated skiers who want to improve their skiing technique and train at a higher level. The competition group will participate in local and regional races.

Equipment

  • Each participant will need an adequate pair of skis, boots, and poles for both classic and skate skiing (skate and classic boots, and poles or "combi" equipment, warm boots and poles.
  • TUNA offers a limited number of season rental ski packages to program participants
  • Season rental skis will be available for pick up during November of each season

Uniforms

  • Comp Team participants are provided with TUNA warm-ups (wind jacket and pants), on loan for the season. Comp Team participants will need to purchase the TUNA race suit available here.
  • Uniform pick-up is scheduled and announced in November of each season.

Adult Programs

TUNA offers adult clinics on Tuesday afternoons for parents of Junior Program skiers and other interested adults. Depending on demand, we anticipate beginner and intermediate groups. Program fees do not include a Mountain Dell trail pass - parents are required to purchase a Mountain Dell pass separately.
