The Junior Competition Ski Team is part of The Utah Nordic Alliance's racing program and is open to all kids from 8-13. It is for those skiers with an interest in developing their skiing skills through formal ski training and games that emphasize the fundamentals of balance, technique, strength and endurance - geared towards athletes who are anticipating participating in cross country ski racing. Skiers should be proficient in both classic and skating techniques. Athletes are encouraged to sign up for the 3day/week program, however we also offer a 2day/week program for those with other comittments. Jr. Comp athletes are also encouraged to race at Wasatch Citizens Series races and IMD Series races.
NEW! Jr Comp Race is a three-day a week program designed for the second year U12 to second year U14 interested in making the Comp Team and racing the Junior National Qualifiers. Although fun is still the overall goal of the program, athletes spend more time on improving their skiing skill set through technique drills and intervals. They will also learn the basics of kick and glide wax application. In practice, athletes are expected to show up prepared to work hard, have fun, and apply themselves to learning the sport of cross country skiing. This includes coming prepared with the correct equipment, and a positive attitude. During the season, athletes are expected to race one JNQ and most of the Wasatch Citizens Series races. Although two pair of ski boots (one classic and one skate) is recommended one good pair will work and one pair of classic skis and one pair of skate skis and poles are required.
The Jr. Comp team meets Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4:15-5:45pm primarily at Mtn. Dell, but also at other venues in the Salt Lake Valley and Park City. Jr Comp race will meet at the same dates, times and locations as the Jr Comp team. For more specific information on training locations and workouts, please check out the Comp Training Calendar.
Please note: TUNA is an all-volunteer organization, is continually in need of volunteers, and requests that the parents or guardians of each participant perform a certain amount of service hours at TUNA sponsored events or functions.
For skiers in the Comp/Jr. Comp program, TUNA requires 15 hours of volunteer service plus one 3 1/2 hour shift of greeting and pass sales at Mountain Dell per enrolled athlete.
We would highly encourage parents to consider taking on another greeting shift as Mountain Dell daily pass sales are vital to the health of TUNA Jr. Programs and the organization as a whole. Extra greeting shifts can be credited against needed volunteer hours.
Mountain Dell Greeter Calendar and guidelines can be found here. http://www.utahnordic.com/greeters
TUNA parent volunteer guidelines and opportunities can be found here: http://www.utahnordic.com/volunteer
After the volunteer service is complete, a request may be sent to volunteer_deposit [at] utahnordic [dot] com. Please indicate name, list dates or function, # of hours worked (totaling 15 hours /athlete), date of Mtn. Dell greeting shift and the deposit will be refunded if all requirements have been met.
