Where to Ski in Utah

By Brian Alm

Soon our magnificent mountains and valleys will be covered with the Greatest Snow on Earth for the next several months. Which means? It’s time for another spectacular season of Nordic skiing. Utah is the ideal place to find thousands of acres of superior cross-country skiing terrain. Most of Utah’s cross-country ski venues are located within an hour drive of Salt Lake City, making it easy to fit in a tour anytime of the day. Experiencing the best Nordic skiing is all that’s left to do, and Utah is just the right place. Experienced skiers and newcomers alike will enjoy unique scenery, trails, terrain and snow found in one place-Utah! So if you’re already planning your ski outings for the season, you won’t want to miss out on the following cross-country ski areas.

Solitude- Is Utah’s oldest cross-country ski area. Solitude’s Nordic Center provides a spectacular setting for cross-country skiing. More than 20 km of trails are set for both classical and skating styles.

Sundance- Offers incredible twilight Nordic skiing. 15 km of trails are groomed for both skating and classical skiing. Sundance also offers access to unlimited backcountry skiing.

White Pine-"Home of the TUNA Relay" White Pine offers 18 km of trail groomed for both skating and diagonal skiing. White Pine is a great place to train and stay in shape throughout the winter season.

Mountain Dell-Another great place to train and visit with fellow TUNA members while skiing. TUNA volunteers donate hundreds of hours to maintain and groom the track. Thanks to their help Mountain Dell is a splendid place for skating and classical skiing. Don’t forget your donation to the "honesty-system" fee booth.

Soldier Hollow-Olympic Venue for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. This venue is like no other in the world. Enjoy world class skating and classical skiing before the Olympics arrive.

Ruby’s Inn-Here is where one can discover the splendor of Bryce Canyon National Park in the winter. Enjoy ski trails inside the park and 50 km of interconnecting groomed trails.

Brian Head-With more than 45 km of marked trails and 300 km of unmarked trails, this resort in Southern Utah offers a variety of terrain for Nordic skiers of all ages and abilities.

Sherwood Hills-Located just up Sardine Canyon between Brigham City and Logan. Sherwood Hills offers 20 km of leisurely skiing terrain.

Homestead-Nestled in the Heber Valley, the Homestead offers 12 km of groomed trail for skating and classical skiing.

Elk Meadows-We just learned about this new resort at press time. Look for information in an upcoming issue of TUNA News.

As you can see Utah has quite a lot to offer when it comes to Nordic skiing. If you know other places to ski in the state please give me a call (w) 801-956-6158 (h) 801-262-8039. I’m sure part II of "Where To Ski In Utah" could easily be written.

Donations:

We have had to significant corporate contributions to the grooming of the track this year with REI contributing $400 dollars and Wild Rose contributing $250. Donors who give more than $50 will be acknowledged in the TUNA News more diligently in the future if you let us know who you are. Lets' just hope for more snow this year!
